book one · 2026
Vampires make perfect postmen. Doorsteps are the one place they never need an invitation.
For a hundred and forty years, the Velvet Post has carried the Night’s mail through the city of Vespers. But behind the sorting hall is a green door, and behind the green door is Returns: the department that steals back what the world has wrongfully taken. One rule: nothing taken that was not taken first, and no one harmed, ever. One problem: some doors only open from the inside.
Enter Winnie Marsh: broke, honest to a fault, and the only person in Vespers a door will open for.

Five questions. There are no wrong answers, only revealing ones. The house reads everything.
You are expected.
You will have heard the stories by now: that vampires make perfect postmen, the doorstep being the one place our kind has never needed an invitation. The stories are true. For a hundred and forty years this house has carried the Night’s mail through the city of Vespers: love letters a century overdue, parcels for lighthouse keepers who do not age, apologies that wanted sixty years to draft.
What the stories do not mention is the green door at the back of our sorting hall, or the department behind it, or its one rule: nothing taken that was not taken first, and no one harmed, ever. Nor do they mention our newest clerk, a warm young woman of excellent judgment and no luck at all, hired for the one talent our kind cannot buy.
